Viking of the Week: Theodor Mertz ’26
If you caught this year’s fall musical, you had the chance to see Theodor Mertz, ’26, completely in his element. Taking on five different roles across five very different musical numbers is no easy task, yet Theo handled it with ease and enthusiasm. Whether he’s performing in a musical, singing with Chamber Singers, or diving into his coursework, he brings the same energy and commitment to everything he does.
In the classroom, Theo’s dedication shows every day. His teachers consistently praise his thoughtful participation, steady work ethic, and upbeat approach to each subject. One teacher described him as someone with “a deep knowledge of and appreciation for scholarship,” especially within the performing arts. As a member of the Baginski Scholars Program, he pushes himself to look closely at ideas, reflect on their meaning, and understand how they connect to his own experiences. He blends his love of theater with his academics in Honors Humanities: World Literature and Theater, where he uses his background in performance to add depth to discussions and help classmates engage with the plays they study and see together. This curiosity carries into all of his classes; he is known for asking questions that move conversation forward and help his peers think more deeply.
Theo’s passion for the arts is unmistakable when he steps on stage. His ability to shift between roles so fluidly comes from his attention to detail and his determination to keep improving. Over his four years with Masque, he has grown not only as a performer but also as a leader. He is the kind of upperclassman younger students naturally look to: generous with advice, patient during rehearsals, and always ready to help someone strengthen a scene or a line. He cheers for his castmates from the wings and celebrates their successes as readily as his own.
For his drive, character, humility, and leadership, we are proud to recognize Theo Mertz, ’26, as this week’s Viking of the Week.
