Central Catholic High School Announces The Centennial Campaign: Rooted in Tradition, Building for Our Future

PITTSBURGH — Central Catholic High School (Central Catholic) today announced the launch of its historic capital campaign, the most ambitious capital initiative in the school’s nearly 100-year history. The Centennial Campaign: Rooted in Tradition, Building for Our Future (the Campaign), will seek to raise a minimum of $55 million for campus improvements as the school prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary in the 2027-28 school year.

Founded in 1927 by Bishop Hugh C. Boyle and guided by the De La Salle Brothers of the Christian Schools (the Brothers), Central Catholic has educated more than 25,000 young men in the Pittsburgh region. The school remains committed to its Catholic, Lasallian mission of faith formation, service to others, and academic excellence.

Major Campaign Initiatives Phase I: Renovation of the Brothers’ House

A comprehensive renovation of the Brothers’ House, home to the De LaSalle Christian Brothers who serve on campus, was completed during the 2024–25 school year. The project modernized and expanded the facility to create accessible, dignified living quarters and enhanced community spaces. The renovation also included enhancements to the Brothers’ Chapel with improved accessibility features and a new elevator to serve the building.

In addition, underutilized sections of the residence were repurposed to house the Offices of the President, Admissions, and Finance & Administration, providing needed administrative space and freeing room in the Main Building for future student-focused initiatives.

Phase II: Construction of a New Student Center

Central Catholic is preparing to break ground on a new, 102,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Student Center, the largest campus project since the construction of the original Main Building, which opened in 1927. The new facility will include a regulation-size gymnasium, fitness center, seasonal team locker rooms, a TV studio, lecture hall, dining hall, and multiple student collaboration and gathering spaces.

The new Student Center will replace the school’s nearly 50-year-old gymnasium and is designed to support student wellness, extracurricular involvement, and modern learning needs while strengthening the sense of community on campus.

Phase III: Main Building Enhancements

The third phase of the Campaign focuses on improvements to the historic Main Building. Plans include the installation of a long-awaited elevator to ensure ADA compliance, upgraded security measures, and modernized climate control to enhance year-round comfort and safety.

With the dining hall and athletic facilities moving to the new Student Center, the school will create expanded space for its fine arts programs.

A Century of Progress

Over the past two decades, Central Catholic has completed several major campus improvements, including the Zupancic Family STEM Center, the De La Salle Counseling Center, the Holy Family Chapel, and upgrades to the Brown Library, McGonigle Theater, and performing arts facilities. These ongoing enhancements reflect the school’s long-term strategic plan and its commitment to meeting the evolving needs of students.
