Sample Gift Language for Your Will or Trust:

I give and devise to Central Catholic High School (Tax ID #200478989), located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the sum of $___________ (or asset) to be used for its general support (or for the support of a specific fund or program).

Residual Gift Language (A residual bequest comes to us after your estate expenses and specific bequests are paid):

I give and devise to Central Catholic High School (Tax ID #200478989), located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, all (or a percentage) of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate, both real and personal, to be used for its general support (or for the support of a specific fund or program).

Owners of traditional IRAs must make required minimum distributions from their account at age 73. The required distribution amount is based on account value and life expectancy tables. Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) are distributions from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) made directly to a qualified nonprofit organization without having the distribution counted as taxable income. 

Consider designating Central Catholic as the recipient of your IRA distribution. Charitable gifts from an IRA are exempt from taxation and qualify as a charitable deduction. Currently, up to $108,000 in IRA funds can be counted as QCDs annually. For married couples, each spouse can make QCDs up to the $108,000 limit for a potential total of $216,000.  As an alternative to an outright IRA gift, you can also name Central Catholic as the beneficiary of your IRA.

Leaving a gift of appreciated securities, including stocks or bonds, has many potential benefits, including a charitable income tax deduction and the avoidance of capital gains tax. Shares of stock may be given via wire transfer. 

If you leave savings bonds to your heirs, they will be taxed on the accumulated interest, leaving them with less than their value. Ask your attorney to add a codicil to your will or an amendment to your living trust that leaves your bonds to Central Catholic. This simple transaction enables Central Catholic to receive 100 percent of its value, and your family bypasses any tax burden.
